The heritage of the classical era is still very evident in the city. The most famous of all being the Parthenon on the Acropolis, which is nominated to be one of the 7 wonders of the modern world. The city also retains a vast variety of Roman and Byzantine monuments and a small number of remaining Ottoman monument projecting the city’s long history across the centuries.

Best Time to Visit Athens

Athens is a year-round destination with year long sunny weather. Late spring through fall is when Athens experiences a huge influx of visitors. That is when the weather is the most accommodating and it’s the school vacation. Although it can get pretty hot in Ausugst, hotels rates then are lower and the city is less crowded as many of Athen’s residents would then have left for their own holidays in other parts of the world.

  • High season: April to October
  • Low season: November to March

Places to Stay in Athens

Hotel Arion, Greece

Hotel Arion, Greece

Hotel Arion’s crowd has a distinctly hipster cast. This is all well, considering that Arion is situated in Psyrri, which at night morphs from funky retail district into clubland.

Rooms facing the street have floor-to-ceiling windows, which suffuse rooms with an inviting brightness. Rooms have a dramatic, bold modern atmosphere. Elaborate bed units combine padded headboards with attached lighting and bedside tables. Exciting bed units aside, many of Arion’s 51 rooms feel quite sparsely decorated and fit into the overall minimalist-modern feel of the place. Bathrooms completely fit the hipster mould: wide mirrors, marble tiling, and cute freestanding half-globe sinks. Bathroom details are all well done, from knobs to faucets to toilet brush holders.
A final highlight is the roof garden. In a city chockablock full of stunning roof garden views, Arion’s roof garden with its translucent sky blue railing is quite remarkable. Price range from € 65 to € 150.

Actual customer comment about Hotel Arion:
“This hotel was fantastic. Close to the metro and all the ruins. Near the plaka if that is your thing, but I would recommend the square in the Plaski closer to the hotel. It has more locals and pricers are cheaper. The hotel itself is VERY clean. The rooftop has the best views of the Accropolis in the whole city”

Next, the Brazil Hotel has a good central location which is what I like about it. North of the city center and near Omonia Station, Victoria offers easy access to many of Athens’ attractions like the National Archaeological Museum as well as Pedion Areos, the city’s largest park. At the recently renovated Victoria station, you can access public transportation. Choose this place if you are comfortable with price range €76 to €104 and the types of lighting the room provides.

Actual customer comment about Brazil Hotel:
“We were very satisfied with our stay at the Brazil Hotel in Athens, Greece. Our room was large, exceptionally clean and had an excellent up-to-date bathroom, including a 2 person Jacuzzi. Our room had a very comfortable bed, nice furniture, special effects lighting, a sound system and a good size television with remote.”
